National Supplements Advisory Committee (NSAG)

In the Fall of 2019, Own the Podium and key partners in the Canadian high performance sport delivery system identified a risk for Canadian athletes related to the potential for future adverse analytical findings from supplement use. These partners, involved in implementing Canada’s sport excellence strategy, agreed that it was prudent to conduct a third-party review of Canada’s approach to the testing, acquisition, and distribution of supplements. One of the recommendations of the review was to create a National High Performance Supplement Advisory Group (NSAG) with the responsibility to: i) publish a Canadian Consensus Statement on supplement use and the high performance athlete, ii) implement a National Supplement Policy (NSP) for High Performance Sport, iii) develop a National Supplement Education Strategy (NSES) for Canadian High Performance Sport, and iv) undertake a comprehensive review of supplement use by Canadian high performance athletes. Since January 2020, 13 representatives from the Canadian high performance sector have been working via Task Groups to meet the NSAG responsibilities.  Draft documentation for external consultation and pilot programming is expected to be available in early 2022.  The NSAG Committee consists of the following representatives:
